Wreck in Bennettsville

Wreck in Bennettsville
This was the scene at North Cook and Everett streets Wednesday, March 29. The white 2015 Ford pickup shown was traveling north on Cook Street around 11:45 a.m. when the gray 1982 Chevrolet pickup at left, traveling south at a high rate of speed, crossed the centerline. The Ford swerved to avoid a head-on collision, but the Chevrolet side-swiped it anyway, causing it to hit a parked vehicle in the parking lot of Eastside Grocery (above). A tire from the Ford also hit another parked vehicle. Following the impact with the Ford, the Chevrolet continued south, hitting and uprooting one tree, then hitting a second tree and coming to a stop in a yard (at left). The driver of the Chevrolet had to be extricated and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown as of press time. According to Bennettsville police, the driver was diabetic and suffering from low blood sugar when he had some type of episode leading to the accident. Witnesses estimated his speed to be about 80 miles per hour. He will likely be charged as he did not have a driver’s license.
