Marlboro Academy’s top ranked softball team continued their roll to the playoffs, smashing Dillon Christian in a pair of games Monday and Tuesday. They also defeated Charlotte Christian Academy 6-2 on Wednesday.
Monday, the Lady Dragons played their home finale, defeating the Warriors, 8-0. Tuesday, the Dragons crushed the Warriors, 24-0 in five innings.
In Tuesday’s game, sophomore pitcher Jenna Greene pitched four perfect innings, incredibly striking out all twelve batters she faced.
The Dragons scored seven runs in the first inning, added another in the second, then got six in the fourth. The game wrapped up with Marlboro pouring on ten additional runs in the fifth. The contest was stopped at that point due to the mercy rule.
Samantha Bryant was 2 for 2 with a home run and 5 RBIs. Jenna Ridge was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs batted in. Abigail Ridge and Regan Liles were 2 for 3 for the Dragons. Savannah Barber had 4 runs batted in.
Monday, Marlboro got off to a quick start, scoring once in the bottom of the first. Jenna Ridge was driven in on a single by fellow senior Emma Covington. The Dragons would leave two runners stranded.
Marlboro put the game away in the second inning thanks to a grand slam.
Prior to the big hit, the Lady Dragons got runs from Laney McLaurin and Savanah Barber.
With Raelyn Seabolt, Covington and Haven Birchfield on base, shortstop Lindsay Hunter smashed a pitch over the center field fence. That gave the Dragons a 7-0 advantage.
The Marlboro offense would be quiet until the bottom of the sixth inning. After reaching on an error, Ridge scored for a third time on a bases loaded walk.
Ridge was 2 for 4 at the plate in her final home game. The Dragons’ other seniors, Covington, Seabolt and Birchfield all got one hit.
Regan Liles pitched all seven innings for the Dragons, striking out six. She allowed four hits and a walk.
The team has two non-region road games before starting play in the SCISA state tournament late next week.
The Lady Dragons are now 27-4 overall. In the latest Maxpreps.com poll, the Dragons are ranked #7 in South Carolina, the only independent school in the top 25.
After the Herald-Advocate sports section went to press, the Lady Dragons defeated Charlotte Christian, 6-2. Greene earned the win for Marlboro. She tossed seven innings, surrendering two runs, three hits, striking out ten, and walking one. Hunter and Jenna Ridge each managed two hits to lead the Dragons' offense.
