The city of Bennettsville celebrated Arbor Day on Friday, December 1, with the planting of a tree. Arbor Day is always the first Friday in December in South Carolina. As a member of Tree City USA, a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and S.C. Forestry Commission, the city always joins in by planting a tree. This year, it was planted next to the Bennettsville Fire Department’s sign, behind city hall, in memory of Linda Stevens McDaniel, who had passed away that week. She was the mother of the city’s assistant fire chief, Steven McDaniel, and the city chose to honor their friend and co-worker. For the second year, children from the First United Methodist Church four-year-old Head Start program (above) helped out with the planting.
