A mess of our own

A couple of weeks ago, State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman announced that her office was taking control of the Allendale County School District.
Allendale has long been the poster-kid for the poor state of public education in South Carolina.  In fact, the only other time that the Department of Education has flexed its muscle and taken over an entire district, it was Allendale in 1999.

County to lease part of old Boro plant to Flakeboard America for warehouse
This week, Marlboro County Council took the first step toward leasing vacant property on Maple Street in Bennettsville to a local industry for warehouse space.
At a called meeting Wednesday at noon, the council gave unanimous, first reading approval to an ordinance authorizing a lease agreement with Flakeboard America Ltd., doing business as Arauco North America.

Lake repair hits another snag

The effort to fix the Lake Paul Wallace spillway and allow the lake to be re-filled has hit another snag.
During recent repairs, workers from Glenn Waterproofing found the damage to the spillway to be more severe than was initially expected.
