Homecoming queen crowned

Marlboro Academy held its annual homecoming last Friday as the basketball teams hosted Dillon Christian.  Sophomore Ragan Liles was crowned as the homecoming queen.  Pictured (l to r) are first runner-up Gibson McLaurin and her escort Devin Hardee, Liles and escort Josh Griggs, second runner-up Madison Johnson and escort Jackson Quick.

Bennettsville’s Carolyn Wallace appears on Today show in NYC

Marlboro County viewers of NBC’s Today show on Friday, January 19, were surprised to see Carolyn Wallace of Bennettsville appear in a conversation with Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, co-anchors of  the show.
The co-anchors went outside the studio to greet visitors and spotted Carolyn holding a sign signifying she had visited the NBC studios 60 years ago and had been in the audience for The Tonight Show with Jack Paar as host. And, she wanted to meet Hoda and Savannah this year.

The Marlboro County Branch NAACP observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a parade on Saturday, January 13, in downtown Bennettsville and a program Monday, January 15, at Shiloh Baptist Church.
The theme of this year’s program was “Educating Students for Success in a Changing World, Past and Present.”
In her opening remarks, the branch president, Pearlie Lawson, said the event honored not just the life and legacy of King, but also all educators, past and present.

Library saying goodbye to two retiring long-term employees

If you’ve visited the Marian Wright Edelman Public Library, you’ve no doubt encountered the smiling faces of Bobbie Coxe and Tammy Perkins.
Collectively, these ladies have given more than 65 years to Marlboro County’s library and its patrons, but times are changing; Coxe retired at the end of last week, and Perkins will retire in February.

3 charged after armed robbery, chase

An armed robbery led to a chase, a wreck, and a manhunt over the weekend, ultimately resulting in the arrests of three men.
It happened Saturday, January 13. The armed robbery actually took place on the roadway at Academy Road and Hwy. 381 North, according to the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspects were identified as driving a black Chevrolet Camaro which was spotted around 3 p.m. by a patrolling deputy at the intersection of Academy Road and Hwy. 385.
